The week of April 1-7 every year is an opportunity to educate pet owners on the importance of cleaning up after their dogs - inform them of the hazards of dog poop to human health, and the environmental risks it poses when left unattended.
The Association of Professional Animal Waste Specialists (aPaws) estimates that pet pooches produce over 4.4 billion pounds of waste per year (2 billion litres).
The National Animal Welfare Trust pick up a lot of poop – 77,000 bags annually to be precise. It’s a tall order to keep things clean and tidy with that many dogs across five centres, which is why we’ve decided to help.
Beco will now be providing the NAWT with eco-friendly dog poop bags. As a vital animal welfare charity, we thought it’d be a good idea to help like-minded organisations who share the same values and, above all else, love pets just like us.
To help keep the NAWT’s centres clean, whilst also remaining as environmentally-friendly as possible, we’ll be providing a year’s supply of dog poop bags. This will start with our degradable bags, which are strong and robust, used to dealing with all shapes and sizes. They’ll fit right at home at the NAWT and help clean up hundreds of poops every day.
With our special agent, D2W, our degradable bags break down within two to five years. They degrade leaving no micro-plastics or toxic residues in any of the centres they’ll be used in. It’s also worth mentioning that these bags come in recyclable packaging. It’s our way of making the unpleasant task of picking up after our dogs much easier.
Looking After Our Dogs, And the Planet
While you’re here, we thought it’d be a good idea to share something else with you. Alongside keeping NAWT centres clean and environmentally friendly, we are always looking to do the same for our planet. As we all know, sustainability is a popular topic right now. At Beco, dogs and how we look after the planet are central to everything we do. So, for all those looking to embrace a more sustainable way to love your dog, here are a few things to bear in mind.
Compostable Dog Poop Bags
Alongside our degradable poop bags, we also provide compostable bags. These are essentially biodegradable dog poop bags, which break down in compost environments, both industrial piles and at home. Made from the plant-based material, cornstarch, they are a tough and durable bag, designed to mimic the effectiveness of plastic, with a reduced environmental impact.
These types of bags are a great way to reduce your carbon footprint, while keeping your parks, pavements and gardens clean. If you want to find out more about compostable poo bags, visit Beco’s blog: can you compost dog poop? Everything you need to know.
Sustainably Sourced Toys
What better way to watch your pet have endless hours of fun, knowing that the toy they’re wrestling or chewing, is sourced from sustainable materials? In the past – and still today – toys were made from plastic, rubber and unethically sourced materials.
Luckily there’s now a whole range of toys made from sustainable materials, like natural rubber, bamboo and hemp. Dogs of all shapes and sizes can enjoy toys that have a reduced impact on our planet. There are also plenty of other products out there, like bowls, beds, food, leads and even soaps.
We’re proud to have teamed up with the NAWT to keep their centres clean, whilst helping them reduce their carbon footprint. We love the work they do and we’re happy to play some part in their fantastic mission. Alongside helping the NAWT, we’re also pleased to see a huge shift toward more sustainable behaviours when it comes to our pets.
As pet people big on sustainability, we can’t wait to see what the future holds for our pets and the planet.
