Mary the cat becomes a mother on Christmas day – The Christmas Miracle

There is something very special about kittens and puppies. Their tiny little paws, their cute little noses, and watching the mother bond with them.

The staff at our NAWT Hertfordshire centre were extremely lucky to be able to witness this for themselves over Christmas, the story we like to call, The Christmas Miracle.

On the 17^{th of} December 2023, a small cat was found inside a carrier in our car park with no human in sight. Sadly, no information was left with her, so we had no idea of the circumstances or anything about her past. However, there was one thing we were certain on, and that was, she was heavily pregnant. We also worked out that she could only have been around 1-year-old herself.

She was cold, scared, and alone, but was now in the safe hands of our team. We made sure she was warm and gave her round the clock care and closely monitored her, and her kittens, to check if they were healthy. It wasn’t long before her kittens decided to make an appearance, meaning we didn’t have to wait very long at all.

On the 25^{th of} December 2023, Christmas Day, she gave birth to four beautiful kittens. Two girls, named Meredith and Christina, and two boys, named George and Alex. We like to think this was her gift to us, for taking such good care of her. It then became clear what name we should give her, Mary.

We would like to use this opportunity to highlight the danger of pet abandonment. It was very lucky that she was safe at the centre when she gave birth. There is a lot of risks involved when cats give birth, but luckily for this little cat, she had a happy ending. There were no complications, and both Mary and her kittens were deemed healthy.

The little family all went into a foster home for about 8 weeks, before coming back to the centre to begin the search for their forever homes. Meredith and Christina have gone into a new home together, whilst George and Alex have found homes separately. Mary is currently reserved.
